20 Digital Marketing Acronyms For Beginners

Every career field uses acronyms and everyone eventually gets confused about which acronyms go with your job or the job upstairs. In marketing, acronyms are used by the plenty and can be easily mixed and matched with different meanings. No one wants to be the guy that uses an acronym wrong during an important meeting. Luckily for you I have compiled a list of the most basic digital marketing acronyms so you can talk like a pro. Here are 20 digital marketing acronyms for beginners. 

1. USP: Unique Selling Proposition

A unique selling proposition is an approach to developing the advertising message that concentrates on the uniquely differentiating characteristic of the product that is both important to the customer and a unique strength of the advertised products when compared to competing products. 2. SEO: Search Engine optimization

Search engine optimization is the process of refining the technical and content elements of a website in order to improve its visibility in search engines without the use of paid promotion. (Add Mustard #1) 

3. CPG: Consumer Packaged Goods

The term consumer packaged goods refers to goods that are:

  • usually sold in smaller packages,
  • carry a low unit price,
  • are distributed through food and drug retailers,
  • are heavily promoted (usually in mass media), and
  • are bought and consumed frequently.

4. PLC: product life cycle

The four stages that a new product is thought to go through from birth to death: introductory, growth, maturity, and decline. (Common Language Marketing Dictionary #3) 

5. CLV: Customer Lifetime Value

Customer lifetime value is the dollar value of a customer relationship, based on the present value of the projected future cash flows from the customer relationship. (Common Language Marketing Dictionary #4)

6. CPM: Cost Per Thousand impressions

Cost per thousand impressions is a “simple and widely used method of comparing the cost effectiveness of two or more alternative media vehicles. (Common Language Marketing Dictionary #5) 

7. PPC: Pay per Click

Pay-per-click is a form of internet marketing whereby advertisers pay ‘per click’ for a visit to their website. (Add Mustard #2) 

8. URL: Uniform Resource Locator  

Uniform resource locator refers to the location of a resource on the Internet.

This term is often used interchangeably with domain and Internet address or website address. (Common Language Marketing Dictionary #6) 

9. SEM: Search Engine Marketing

Search engine marketing is one of the pinnacles of digital marketing, and revolves around increasing a business’ visibility in search engines through paid advertisements. (Add Mustard #3) 

10. CPC: Cost per click

The CPC is the monetary value of one ‘click’ on an advertiser’s website advert, as charged by search engines. The CPC is determined by a bidding system whereby advertisers set their maximum bid. (Add Mustard #4) 

11. CTR: Click-Through Rate  

CTR enables marketers to measure how many clicks a specific link receives, as a percentage of the total views the link achieved. (Add Mustard #5) 

12. CTA: Call to action

A call to action is found most commonly as a message, link or button. The objective of a CTA is to promote an immediate response from the reader. (Add Mustard #6) 

13. KPI: Key performance indicator

A KPI is a numeric unit or qualitative measurement used to assess the success of a business’ or an individual’s performance. (Add Mustard #7) 

14. SERP: Search Engine Results Page

The SERPs are the search results a user is shown after typing a query into a search engine. The results serve to the user aim to match the keyword entered, to best aid the user’s query. (Add Mustard #8) 

15. DRAds: Direct Response Advertisements  

This form of advertising is designed to engage an immediate reaction from a consumer. Within each DRAd is a device which the user is prompted to click on to receive a discount for a product. (Add Mustard #9) 

16. B2B/B2C: Business to Business/ Business to Consumer

B2B relates to the trading of products or services between businesses. This is opposed to a B2C exchange that represents a financial trade for a product or service between a business and a regular customer. (Add Mustard #10) 

17. UX/CX: User Experience/Customer Experience

UX refers to the encounter and experience a person has while using a product, website or application. CX refers to the process of keeping a customer engaged and satisfied with a company’s services. (Add Mustard #11) 

18. GA: Google Analytics

GA is a free web analytics platform created by Google to track and measure website traffic, performance, and offer user insights. (Add Mustard #12) 

19. WoW, MoM and YoY: Week on Week, Month on Month, and Year on Year  

These terms refer to the comparison of performance (of anything from website traffic to sales) over the specified time period. (Add Mustard #13) 

20. ROI: Return on investment  

ROI is a percentage calculation used to measure the efficiency of a business’ investment. ROI is calculated by dividing the cost of the investment by the profit generated, and multiplying this by 100. (Add Mustard #14)
